Is it weird not to type out "Maries" instead? Kind of... But that's beside the point. We're here to celebrate on of our favorite national holidays... Bloody Mary Day! January 1st, known to some of you out there as New Year's Day, is a day to soak up the tomato-y, savory, sometimes spicy brunch bevvie that has generations of moms out there saying, "Let's be bad... Sure, I'll have another!" But before you go buckwild for a Bloody, make sure you...
At Paiku in St John's (N Portland), everything is handmade! It's super Portland. You'll find delicious brunch options from wild boar hash, honey sage french toast, and orange peel-heavy marmalade. It's all worth it. Not to mention their deliciously spicy Bloody Mary, which is topped with all your favorite pickled goodies to enjoy with your meal (and yes, we are referring to your drink as the meal in this case!).
When you're looking for a Bloody Mary with a meal on top, look no further than Genie's Cafe on SE Division St. They serve not only a delightfully traditional Bloody, but they also add a bloody huge slice of bacon on top! Their pickled offerings atop your brunch beverage may not be able to be beat by the others on this list -- they're that good! Plus, Genie's Cafe offers all your traditional breakfast and brunch faves.
Speaking of old standards, C Bar's Bloody Mary is everything you're looking for when you're nursing the New Years hangover of the century (at least of the year so far, am I right?). You'll get those notes of tomato, spice, vodka (or what have you), and you'll see the olive/pickle/lime combo on top that you know and love. Definitely worth a stop for their fried chicken and burgers.
One of those places that always has an insanely long (yet well-deserved) line, Jam's traditional breakfast and brunch fare is exactly what you're looking for on a morning that also needs a Bloody Mary. Their Bloodys are yes, delicious, yes, full of all your faves, and yes, we're running out of ways to say that these Bloody Marys are amazing. In this case, you'll also find plenty of vegan and vegetarian options on their menu (their bloodys too) -- and the Bloody Marys are made with Portland Potato Vodka, which is pretty fun too.
Now here's a Portland stalwart at its best -- the Jolly Roger (which is constantly faced with potentially shutting down for new apartment development, or whatever those guys are building these days) is a favorite of locals for what feels like generations. And yeah, a pile of pickles are great on top (or bacon, or a whole burger, or whatever wild stuff people are stacking on top of these things), but we're big fans of the biggest chunk of celery you can find. There's something about that refreshing crunch that makes the whole thing go down easier.
Party hardy then head to Hey Love or Doug Fir for a night cap. Know that you will wake up in a comfortably modern bed, then head to any of these hot spots for the best Bloody Mary around. Winters at Jupiter Hotel are unparalleled. All we need is YOU.
