The Thinking Man's Poster Artist
June 2- August 1. Reception for the artist June 2, 6-8PM
Emek is a designer, illustrator and fine art painter living in Portland Oregon. Famously penned “The Thinking Man’s Poster Artist” by punk-rock singer Henry Rollins while working on his album cover for A Rollins in the Wry amongst other Rollins’ album covers and gig poster commissions.
He was invited to exhibit at the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received national and international media attention (CNN, New York Times, The Guardian, LA Weekly Rolling Stone, WiReD, Juxtapoz, the cover of the Oregonian, OPB etc.). Emek’s work has been shown in galleries across the United States and Canada, and in Berlin, London, Tokyo, Paris, Antwerp, among others.
Bridging the gap between the psychedelic imagery of the 1960s and the pop-culture and post-industrial iconography of the 1990s, the enigmatic emerged as one of the most successful poster artists of the contemporary era, creating memorable work informed by elements of fantasy, social commentary and biting wit. The son of artists, Emek was born during the 1970s, but was nevertheless deeply influenced by the countercultural revolution of the previous decade, and also the DIY ethic of the Punk Rock movement, this series at the Gallery will deeply display that influence.
